Attitude Transformation

When swimming lessons were offered last summer at Ames Lake Neighborhood, an 8th grader named Sheyli jumped at the opportunity. When she turned in her registration form to Lisa Crocker, the Resident Services Coordinator, Lisa invited her to participate in the Ames Teen Group.

In September, Sheyli began attending the Ames Teen Group. At first it was a difficult transition. Sheyli was very sarcastic and negative both about the teen group and school. To give Sheyli and other middle school youth an outlet for their complaints, Lisa created a suggestion box. At first many of the entries were unproductive comments about activities, but slowly good suggestions emerged, many from Sheyli. In fact, she suggested acknowledging birthdays by allowing the birthday person to choose the snack and activity for that day. Sheyli attends the program every day and often arrives early to complete her school assignments. She has made friends and is respected as a leader among her peers. Sheyli has also become an active community volunteer helping with large community events and recruiting other teens. "Sheyli is a great addition to the Ames Teen Group!" beamed Lisa. "It has been fun to see her positive attitude emerge. She has definite leadership potential and I'm excited to see how she uses it in the future."

Can you feel it?  It’s coming.  What is it?

It's summer and the long hot days are just around the corner.  For many low-income youth with limited resources, summer can be downright boring and unproductive.  It can even be dangerous, as hours of idle time add up to risky behavior.  At Opportunity Neighborhood, we believe a community full of engaged youth is a healthy community.  That is why we work hard to provide a variety of activities, field trips and summer day camps to combat the risk of boredom.  We also partner with schools, churches, and other youth serving organizations to get youth connected to summer activities in the community.   Take a look at our Resident Services Calendar below for a taste of all we
offer and how we fend off boredom.

Resident Services Calendars

When residents know one other, everyone benefits. They begin to take ownership in their community and crime decreases. That is why Opportunity Neighborhood provides a wide variety of community events to residents. Whether it's holiday parties, neighborhood barbeques or movie nights.  These events provide a format for residents to meet one other and build community.

What community events are happening this month? Take a look at the activity calendars.
